Shop the Store : : Pigeon

With 18 years of restaurateuring in Los Angeles, most notably Cobras and Matadors, Church and State, Potato Chip, and Escuela,  Steven Arroyo turns his hat to one of his long time passions; Design, into a new business venture.

His newly opened Pigeon on Beverly Blvd,  carries his hand picked vintage home furnishings, found curio, and even his own custom designed pieces.  In the few short weeks of being open, the store has already been getting noticed by Design magazines, people who want to collaborate with him, and the many who are intrigued by the diagonal blue and white stipe sign out front who have to stop and find out what’s inside.

I asked Steven to answer a few questions:

What tunes are you listening to right now?

Anything played on 91.5 KUSC.  I’m finding classical music to be the most gangster and rock n roll right now.

What things do you like to collect?

I’ve been collecting books, and old bistro chairs since the turn of the century. That’s about it.  I’ve been selling the chair collection, but I would never sell a book I only have two of.

How do you describe your style?

 ill 🙂

What is your most treasured possession?

I have a few pieces of art, and a few pair of boots I really treasure. But the thing I would  part with last are photos of my children growing up and my parents growing old.

Donnie Molls : DISPOSABLE CULTURE

Piston 1, 2012

Edward Cella Art + Architecture is pleased to present Disposable Culture, the first solo exhibition at the gallery for Los Angeles based artist Donnie Molls. The exhibition features the newest suite of mixed media paintings and objects by Molls which invoke the indelible hold of the automobile on the recesses of the North American psyche. Even after we discard them for scrap and recycling, our cars remain loaded with narrative, suggestion, and spectral traces of identity. Building on his fascination with objects and places that are overlooked or abandoned, and yet charged with the transient presence of absentia, Molls transforms the gallery space into a modern day memento mori with images of wrecking yards, tire piles, and car part graveyards. Our cars become a significant emblem of our consumption, our waste, our mutable identities, our optimism, and ultimately of our own impermanence. An apt signifier for the dystopian facets of the American Dream, and the ravages and remnants of its consumptive appetites and excesses, the wrecked car is a heavy ghost in the American landscape. ~via Edward Cella

You might remember the post I did on Donnie last year.  He’s my friend and neighbor.  Excited to see this show!  Opens tonight.

The High Line

As I mentioned in my previous post below, my husband is just back from New York and boy was he excited to tell me about The High Line. It is my son’s favorite book, The Curious Garden, come to life!

The Curious Garden is about a little boy named Liam, and how he discovers a struggling garden and decides to take care of it. As time passes, the garden spreads throughout the dark, gray city, transforming it into a lush, green world.

The High Line, is an elevated park built atop an abandoned railway running thru the Meatpacking District to 34th Street in Manhattan, NY. Transformed by landscape architects James Corner Field Operations, with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro and maintained by Friends of the High Line, the rehabilitated space provides a lush, green, elevated paradise for Manhattanites and all its visitors.

Check out filmmaker Austin Dill’s short video of the park here to get a virtual slice of it for yourself.

MassiveMusic

I’m sure you have noticed that the last few posts of mine have been in some way or another related to music. Seems like I’m on a roll….so why stop now? I R E A L L Y like the interiors that Ronald Hooft @ PRASTHOOFT did to the Amsterdam offices of MassiveMusic. Loving the slab wood conference table, the black and white mural of speakers and the way he used the color orange throughout. Very cool.

Anvil

Ok, my latest obsession is with Anvil cases. Yeah, I saw the small one at the Ace Hotel NY, then I spotted the console from Diesel. Looks so fresh! I’ve been trying to find a cool idea for a coffee table that could also do double duty as toy storage. BINGO> Found the blue one on Craigslist. Perfect!

Repurposed

Love this UpCycle Ottoman found at 2modern by Gus*. Made out of “surplus jute bags previously used to transport organic coffee beans”. Each one is unique. Would love to have a bunch of these!
