On Saturday I took my little guy to a super fun book launch party at MOCA | The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.  He got to color on a huge wall of images from the book with a bunch of arty kids while OBEY artist,  Shepard Fairey spun records.

Outside the Lines Coloring Book, a very cool collection of illustrations from more than 100 creative masterminds, including animators, cartoonists, fine artists, graphic artists, illustrators, musicians, outsider artists, photographers, street artists, and video game artists, curated by Souris Hong-Porretta. Tons of the artists were present at the event to sign copies of the book.

The only bummer was that the book SOLD OUT at the MOCA Store before I was able to buy one for my guy and needless to say that led to a major meltdown temper tantrum.  I tried to explain to him I would get the book online and did once I got home.  I bought several copies because this would make a killer gift for a little person.  They haven’t arrived yet, but I’m thinking I should probably keep one for myself as well.

Art and Dissent @ WEHO Library

mural by Shepard Fairey via CA Home+Design

Jonah and I have been spending some time at the new West Hollywood Library lately.  It’s a pretty cool visit.  Outside of the building are murals by Sheppard Fairey, RETNA, and Kenny Scharf all funded by MOCA as an extension of “Art in the Streets“.

Inside, near the Children’s area is a fantastik view of the Pacific Design Center and Posters from the Center for the Political Graphics, part of Decade of Dissent: Democracy in Action 1965-1975 exhibition:
It was specifically designed to be auxiliary and complementary to Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980 exhibitions taking place in West Hollywood. “Art is at the center of every movement for social change,” says Wells. “This exhibition stands testament to the effect poster art had in championing protest for a greater democracy in Southern California and the United States. The show also documents a wide variety of causes, and it is sobering to realize that nearly 40 years later, people are still taking to the streets over many of these same issues—from opposition to war to promoting LGBTQ rights.” ~artandcointv.com

The posters will be up until April 28th and the murals are expected to be up for at least a year.
