Parachute Market | ELEMENTAL

parachuteThis weekend brings another event from Parachute Market : : ELEMENTAL

E L E M E N T A L will provide a special opportunity for patrons to experience design through a theme that explores both the physical and ethereal origins of the design process. The participating designers are invited to represent their finished work, while including in their exhibit some nod to how the elements play into creative process. Some artists might exhibit their processes externally on the surface of their goods, while others could invite more conceptual inquiry about the influences that lead to the finished product. The objective is to communicate the value of the process while also presenting a final product for sale. In an era of behind the scenes and curated reality of the insta-community, this is an opportunity to editorialize one’s personal design with authenticity and freedom of interpretation.

At this weekend’s event you will find installations from vintage object/furniture store The Window,  LAs Joel Chen of JF Chen and artist Clare Graham of Mor York. Along with booths from Reform Gallery, A Current Affair, Twenty Two Hours to just name a few.

Parachute Market : : ELEMENTAL starts this Saturday and is located at 405 Mateo St. Downtown Los Angeles.  Please visit their Facebook page and web site for more information.

Shop the Store : : Pigeon

With 18 years of restaurateuring in Los Angeles, most notably Cobras and Matadors, Church and State, Potato Chip, and Escuela,  Steven Arroyo turns his hat to one of his long time passions; Design, into a new business venture.

His newly opened Pigeon on Beverly Blvd,  carries his hand picked vintage home furnishings, found curio, and even his own custom designed pieces.  In the few short weeks of being open, the store has already been getting noticed by Design magazines, people who want to collaborate with him, and the many who are intrigued by the diagonal blue and white stipe sign out front who have to stop and find out what’s inside.

I asked Steven to answer a few questions:

What tunes are you listening to right now?

Anything played on 91.5 KUSC.  I’m finding classical music to be the most gangster and rock n roll right now.

What things do you like to collect?

I’ve been collecting books, and old bistro chairs since the turn of the century. That’s about it.  I’ve been selling the chair collection, but I would never sell a book I only have two of.

How do you describe your style?

 ill 🙂

What is your most treasured possession?

I have a few pieces of art, and a few pair of boots I really treasure. But the thing I would  part with last are photos of my children growing up and my parents growing old.

Pigeon is located at 7613 W. Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036  thepigeongalleryla@gmail.com

Come shop with me….

Momma (that’s me) hit the pavement today.  Thought I’d check out a few spaces I hadn’t been to in a while and a few new ones, like Gray Gallery.  I’ve noticed it on Melrose for a while now, but hadn’t had the time until today.  Well, I checked it out and wasn’t disappointed.

Above are my fave pieces.  BTW…Laurent Esquerre’s Skull is huge.  You can sit on it!  LOVE>

Gray Gallery is at 8751 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA

Thank you Nicole for your welcoming tour.

This post was inspired by another movie I watched the other night, “L’Amour Fou,” a documentary about Yves Saint Laurent, the French couturier, narrated by Pierre Bergé, his partner in business and in life. You see, I haven’t really seen many movies since my son was born 3 1/2 years ago and we JUST got Netflix over the holidays, so you could say I’m catching up on MY viewing pleasure.

I LOVED this movie. It was full of amazing imagery; Yves Clothing of course, hanging with Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger & the likes from the 60s and 70s, the incredible collection of objects d′art which in 2009 sold at Christiesfor $484 Million, and the fabulous homes that Yves and Pierre owned. I’m totally fascinated by the ones they owned Morocco, 3 in total. Dar es Saada and *The Villa Oasis were both decorated by Bill Willis and Jacques Grange designed Villa Mabrouka*Both designers collaborated on Villa Oasis.

I found a great article in T Magazine on decorator Bill Willis here and another– The Things Yves Loved  on Vanity Fair.

Persephenie Store Opening

You might remember I had Persephenie as a guest on Design*ByProxy a short while back. Well, she just announced her studio is now a botique selling Japanese incense, botanical perfumes, oils and her jewelry and much more. Just in time to pick up something cool for yourself or someone you love for the holidays.
Come by December 14th @ 12 for tea, wine and Zen chocolates.
