Willy Rizzo, famed celebrity photographer and furniture designer, died in Paris on Feb. 25, aged 84.

Willy Rizzo’s furniture design channelled the sophistication of Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, his pieces combining clean, simple lines with bold geometric forms and a delicate handling of materials. His lack of formal training in furniture design placed him outside Italy’s strong, indigenous design traditions, making his style utterly unique at the time.~ wikipedia.org

Jens Risom’s Retreat

These are just a few of the images taken from a really great short film for DWELL on Danish mid century furniture designer and Co-Founder of Knoll Furniture Company Jens Risom‘s pre-fab vacation home. Designed by the designer himself back in 1965, the home still sits on Block Island, a beach town a ferry ride away from Narragansett, Rhode Island.

Watch the film here and listen to Jens reminisce about the how the the simple A-frame structure, which is still in use by his children and grandchildren, was built by a three-person team from a Massachusetts prefab home company.

Shop the Store : : Pigeon

With 18 years of restaurateuring in Los Angeles, most notably Cobras and Matadors, Church and State, Potato Chip, and Escuela,  Steven Arroyo turns his hat to one of his long time passions; Design, into a new business venture.

His newly opened Pigeon on Beverly Blvd,  carries his hand picked vintage home furnishings, found curio, and even his own custom designed pieces.  In the few short weeks of being open, the store has already been getting noticed by Design magazines, people who want to collaborate with him, and the many who are intrigued by the diagonal blue and white stipe sign out front who have to stop and find out what’s inside.

I asked Steven to answer a few questions:

What tunes are you listening to right now?

Anything played on 91.5 KUSC.  I’m finding classical music to be the most gangster and rock n roll right now.

What things do you like to collect?

I’ve been collecting books, and old bistro chairs since the turn of the century. That’s about it.  I’ve been selling the chair collection, but I would never sell a book I only have two of.

How do you describe your style?

 ill 🙂

What is your most treasured possession?

I have a few pieces of art, and a few pair of boots I really treasure. But the thing I would  part with last are photos of my children growing up and my parents growing old.

Maria Pergay: Place des Vosges

From a 17th-century perch on the re-glamorized Place des Vosges in Paris, hip-again furniture designer Maria Pergay briefs filmmaker Pamela Hanson on why her seductive 70s metal minimalism feels so at home on the parquet. Pergay, who occupies a rarefied niche between interiors and contemporary art, began as a window dresser for couturiers and has designed limited-edition furniture and commissioned decor since the 60s. Both her new and early pieces remain in demand, and she is being recognized this year with a Légion d’honneur. To celebrate the 55th anniversary of her career, Pergay co-organized a retrospective in the French capital with galleries Demisch Danant (New York) and JGM (Paris), where she arranged a sampling of work from the past five decades into one living environment. The sculptural cabinets, seats and side tables reveal the designer’s ability to revitalize traditional boiserie with highly polished metalwork that folds back like the exquisite leaves of a “jardin sécret.” Turning her camera towards the decorative details of the showroom, Hanson flips us through a catalog of Pergay’s most recent collection, while the artist shares what inspires her with gallerist Suzanne Demisch.~nowness

Inn Heaven

Last week I went over to my friends Steve Werndorf and Gisela Marin’s home in the Hollywood Hills to check out their Moving Sale.  I’ve only been to their house a handful of times, but I have to say the 1926 Spanish Hacienda has such a magically quality to it I felt a bit sad knowing that this was most likely the last time I would be there since it was recently purchased by someone else.  As I walked out empty handed,  I felt compelled to snap a few pics shown above. I think you can tell it’s not just the property alone that makes it special, but their unique mix of mid-century furniture, antiques, art, and original photography that spin a “rustic meets modern” homey vibe.

Lucky for you and me,  the same vibe has been created at Inn Paradiso, the property that Giesla and Steve bought a few years ago.   Surrounded by old growth oak trees and wildlife, the Inn is located in Paso Robles, California’s Central Coast, and sits half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco.  Inn Paradiso has earned “Sunset Magazine Editor’s Choice” and a recent mention on T magazine here.
