This Is The House That Jack Built

jack

There’s a new book on my radar and I want to share it with you.  “This is the House That Jack Built” named from the nursery rhyme, gives us a look at the contemporary art and design collection of the very private art collector, Maja Hoffmann.  Art directed by Beda Achermann and photographed by François Halard, both have created images of Hoffman’s collection located in her homes in tight vignettes with text of the nursery rhyme  woven throughout the book.

“This Is The House That Jack Built” plays down Hoffmann’s actual houses while (like the nursery rhyme) conveying the centrality of the idea of home, yet one is struck by the breathtakingly original interiors furnished with the best examples of 20th-century design. Hoffmann’s eye for architecture and furniture is as discerning as it is for paintings, and she manages to create spaces where the art, despite its importance, doesn’t overshadow the life of a room. ~T Magazine

I’m Back…

THE WEBSTER at THE ELDER STATESMAN

statesman

statesman.png-001In case you noticed, I’ve been MIA on Design*ByProxy, pretty much the whole summer. Well, I’m back now and I’m want to play a little catch up.  It’s been a summer of music festivals, traveling in Europe, and a few unfortunate events that had to do with the family pets.

Before I went MIA I did attend a few events.  One was a cocktail party in celebration of The Elder Statesman and The Webster Miami’s T-shirt collaboration.  The Elder Statesman is a Los Angeles based luxury lifestyle label founded in 2007 by Greg Chait. Specializing in high end cashmere goods, Greg’s line includes items for men, women, kids, accessories and items for the home like blankets and pillows.

The party was cool, with the likes of Balthazar and Rosetta Getty, Anthony Keidis of Red Hot Chili Peppers and designer Magda Berliner, most sipping on the free tequila and conversations centered around Coachella that was happening the following weekend.

Funny, how the spots geographically closest to me are the last places I visit.  Maria (my partner in crime, so to speak) suggested we meet at The Pikey.  Cause God knows if I’m put on the spot and asked where we should go to lunch, I’ll probably suggest  some spot in Culver City that will take a hour to get to. Of course I wouldn’t think of The Pikey on Sunset Blvd. because it’s probably the closest place to eat just down the hill from us in Nichols Canyon. The drive: 10 mins tops. Geez!

Anyways, I’ve heard owners Jared Meisler and Sean MacPherson‘s place had some good Fish n’ Chips. So that’s what we ordered.  Must admit, it was pretty good.  And of course you can’t really go wrong with anything that Sean’s done (most of the places he did with my husband, Jon Sidel in the 90s are still around today: Swingers, JONES, Good Luck Bar). The Punkey British  Pub atmosphere alone is enough reason to go to The Pikey, if not for the fact that Chef Ralph Johnson formally from NYCs The Spotted Pig is manning the kitchen.

I’ll definitely be back for drinks.  Join me!

In 2007,  Gerald Casale of DEVO purchased  Neutra’s Kun House in the Hollywood Hills for 2 million dollars.  He has spent the last 7 years restoring the 1,732 square feet of living space on three-and-a-half stories, keeping to many of the original details, but adding modern conveniences.

Located in Hollywood Hills West the property boasts tons of windows, fabulous views and even an outdoor meditation area.  It’s listed at 3.5 million and is presented by Aaron Kirman of Aaroe Estates, the luxury properties division of John Aaroe Group.
